Lazonby Pool – A Village Outdoor Gem

Lazonby Pool – A Village Outdoor Gem

Lazonby is a picturesque village just outside of Penrith, and its community-run outdoor pool is one of Cumbria’s hidden treasures.

Getting there is simple:
Only 15 minutes by car from Penrith (Junction 40 on the M6)

Just a 5-minute walk from Lazonby and Kirkoswald train station

Accessibility is just one of this pool’s many strong points. Tucked alongside the River Eden, it’s part of a network of five regional outdoor pools (Shap, Greystoke, Askham, Husonby and Lazonby) that serve the Cumbrian community. Despite growing up nearby, it took me years to finally visit, and I’m so glad I did.

Why Swim at Lazonby Pool?

Lazonby Pool offers more than just a place to swim; it offers a gentle introduction to open-air swimming. Not everyone feels confident diving into lakes or seas straight away. For many, this is the perfect stepping stone.
Heated to around 24 degrees and 17 metres in length, it offers the comfort of a warm, safe environment with all the fresh-air benefits of outdoor swimming. Lifeguards are always on duty for public swims, and the soothing sight of swifts overhead adds to the tranquil experience.
I visited with my aunt, who hadn’t been in the water for over a year. She’s no stranger to outdoor dipping, but life had got in the way. Lazonby was just the right setting to reignite her love of swimming, and I believe the simple but well-thought-out facilities had a lot to do with it.

Facilities & First Impressions

Booking is easy via the website. On arrival, you’ll be greeted by a friendly attendant at the kiosk who will issue a wristband for swimmers and a different colour for spectators. There’s also a small hatch where spectators can grab drinks and snacks (no hot food is available), with a decent undercover seating area.
Changing rooms are basic but have a charming 1990s retro vibe. One swimmer did note that they felt a little exposed despite the cubicle curtains, but I had my Changing Tube with me and was able to change in comfort and with ease.
One standout feature? The pool's steps. Wide and shallow, they make entering and exiting the pool easy and graceful. No awkward hauling yourself out like at some facilities. It’s a small thing, but one that both my aunt and I really appreciated.
The pool itself was spotless and had just the right balance of chlorine. Cleanliness is clearly a priority here, and it shows. We left feeling refreshed and impressed.

Membership & Pricing

The swim season was in full swing during our visit, and all season tickets had already sold out. The attendant kindly explained the options and pointed out that their adult-only sessions were capped at just six swimmers. That’s practically a private swim, a rare treat these days.

Pricing is simple:
Under 2s: Free

Everyone else: £6.50

Season tickets: From £104

More info on pricing and pool hire is available here: https://www.lazonbypool.co.uk/opening-times-and-prices/

Parking & Transport

Parking could potentially be tight during peak times, especially since the pool shares its grounds with a 10-pitch campsite. We visited on a damp and breezy Friday evening before school holidays, so parking was no issue. But if you're visiting on a sunny weekend, consider taking the train. It’s just a short stroll from the station.

Community Spirit & Support

As with many community-run pools, Lazonby Pool relies on support and fundraising to keep running. Recent renovations were funded via a grant and over £10,000 in local fundraising. If you’re in the area, please do pay them a visit, or consider contributing here: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/helpfixlazonbypool

Will I return?

Whether you're returning to swimming, dipping your toe for the first time, or looking for a quiet swim with a view, Lazonby Pool delivers. Friendly, affordable, and set in a beautiful location, it is a lovely example of how outdoor pools can serve and uplift a community. I will be back.
