Askham Outdoor Pool

Askham Outdoor Pool

Askham is one of five brilliant community-led outdoor pools in Cumbria (Shap, Greystoke, Askham, Hunsonby and Lazonby), and it’s a bit of a hidden gem. Just a 15-minute drive from Penrith (or hop on the S11 bus outside Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, right across from Penrith station), this lovely village dates back to the 13th century. You’ll find 17th and 18th century pubs, a friendly vibe, and Lowther Castle just a 40-minute walk away. If you’re a walker, Askham also sits along the scenic Ullswater Way (Lowther Loop).

Getting There

The pool is on the left as you enter the village from Penrith, but it’s easy to miss. You may accidentally end up in The Queen’s Head car park. Look out for a sharp left-hand turn into the honesty car park just outside the pool gates.

As it’s such a handy base for walks on the Ullswater Way, the car park can fill up quickly, especially in good weather, so aim to arrive early for the best chance of a space.

What to Expect at Askham Pool

Facilities are simple but functional. You can leave your belongings in the changing rooms or bring them poolside. The 20m main pool is heated and clean, with a separate heated paddling pool for younger swimmers.

Lifeguards are always present, and there are clear signs reminding parents that they remain responsible for their children. Non-swimming parents have plenty of space to sit and watch, though there’s no permanent shelter. During wet weather, the nearby trees tend to be the go-to cover spot.

You can also hire the whole pool for parties or private events, including triathlon training. Hire is £50 per hour and includes lifeguard cover. Post-swim, a small kiosk sells drinks and snacks, and they take contactless payments.

Tickets & Opening Times

  • Adults & kids over 5: £5.00
  • Non-swimmers: £2.00
  • Under 4s: Free

The pool is seasonal, open from spring through early September. Booking online in advance is recommended, and checking their Facebook page for closures or private hire notices will help avoid wasted journeys.

When to Go

Askham Pool is popular, especially in summer and on weekends. If you’re looking for quieter swimming or lane time, weekday mornings or early season visits are your best bet. Families will find weekends lively and welcoming, with a great community feel.
